Famous Spanish Artists

by Catherine McCulloch

When you think of Spain, often tapas and flamenco is what comes to mind. However, the culture boasts so much more than that with a range of arts and We've rounded up a list of some Spanish artists from music to architecture who have made waves throughout the country.

Remember the London 2012 Olympics? Seems like ages ago, doesn't it? Bust cast your mind back to the opening ceremony, when all that excitement was still to come. Remember the moment when the Spanish team burst into the stadium. Remember their kit? Those bizarre, lurid tracksuits with patterns on them that looked like a cross between seaside rock and knitwear by Missoni? They were in fact paying tribute to one of Spain's most famous architects, Barcelona-born Antoni Gaudi.

Gaudi's passion for organic, natural forms shaped the city of Barcelona in a remarkable way: the wonderfully whimsical Parc Guell, a failed urbanisation project; the stunning, but unfinished church of the Segrada Familia; the flowing lines of the Casa Batllo, almost reminiscent of a skeleton - all these landmark buildings are the work of just one man.

Back in the 1970s and '80s Europe couldn't get enough of Spain's leading heart throb, Julio Iglesias. This iconic singer was born and raised in Spain's capital city, Madrid, before moving on to Miami in 1981 after his career took off by storm.

Releasing plenty of autobiographies, the singer has had quite the life story to tell and even played professional football for Real Madrid before finding his feet in the music industry. If that's not enough , it's no wonder that Iglesias's younger son, Enrique, inherited his show-stopping good looks and star quality, and after being the best-selling Spanish musician of the 1990s, has gone on to international stardom. Quite a family and another victory for Spain!
